The New Year is almost upon us, and this means a new year for racing. If you are like me, RunDisney is going to be a feature in these race plans. I am starting the year off with the Walt Disney World Half Marathon on January 7th. RunDisney and New Balance have a deep partnership, and this is good for us here in Fayetteville, because The Runners Spot carries New Balance shoes.
If you are going to complete a 5k at Disney World or here in North Carolina the New Balance Zante is the shoe for you. This is a light weight minimal drop shoe. I use this shoe for running my speed workouts and on days I just want a light shoe.
When doing a 10k with Minnie or your best friend the 1080 has the cushion for you. The 1080 changed about a year ago when New Balance added fresh foam to this shoe. In doing that this staple went from a 12mm drop to an 8mm drop and they shaved about 2oz off the weight. This shoe truly shines when you are walking or running in it, you start to feel the responsive cushioning of the fresh foam. This is a great 10k distance shoe because of the weight and cushion level.
When completing a half marathon I know my form goes to crap about mile 11. This happens to many people, because of this deteriorating form, I like to have a bit of stability when completing this distance. The New Balance shoe that I would recommend is the Vongo. This is made from the fresh foam material as well so it is nice and cushioned. The Vongo also has a varus wedge to help keep your form in line. This shoe feels great every step of the way and the stability is not obtrusive.
The Marathon is a fun distance to run but also comes with many challenges. There is the 'wall' that we can hit that makes us feel like we cannot take another step. The point when we do not want to eat the nutrition we brought with us. Then the point when no matter what shoe we have on our feet, we want it off. Now the shoe you wear for this is up to you, I personally would go with the Zante because of how light and cushioned it is. Many would prefer the Vongo or 1080 instead. Just find what works for you and run with it.
This year will be my 8th Disney Half Marathon in the past 10 years. I love running through the parks and have in the past done the Goofy Race and A Half Challenge. There is also the Dopey Challenge for the person who loves to get up at 2am. See y'all at the races!
