With September 11th being an emotional day for the United States and the victims and families of those affected, we at Fleet Feet Sports Runner’s Spot wanted to memorialize and remember this day and give thanks to those who have served and currently serve our nation. On September 8, 2017, we hosted a run along with Wear Blue: Run to Remember.
Wear Blue: Run to Remember is a nonprofit organization that was founded by Lisa Hallett and Erin O’Connor, two army wives who had lost their husbands during the redeployment of 5-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team. During this deployment, a significant amount of combat losses and causalities were sustained, including the loss of Hallett’s husband CPT John Hallett. Hallet and O’Connor, both avid runners, found support through fellow runners and military spouses that they ran with and turned a small running group into a nationwide organization. This organization meets weekly to honor the fallen and their families.
At the beginning of the event, everyone gathered in the weekly tradition of a Circle of Remembrance. During which, there is a moment of silence for those whose lives were lost. Following this moment, the names of those who have fallen are called out in the circle. This is a truly emotional experience realizing how many men and women have lost their lives for our country.
After honoring the service and sacrifice of the American military, we sprinted off on our 2-mile and 3-mile Pub Run and enjoyed the company of those around us. Thank you to everyone that participated in this event making it one to remember.
