On May 28th The Runner's Spot helped sponsor the inaugural 5 Mile Buddy Relay as a part of the Honor Our Military Everyday (HOME) weekend in Pinehurst. The Buddy Relay was a unique running race that required teams of two people to each run a 2.5 mile loop through the historic city of Pinehurst along the beautiful Pinehurst Greenway. There was also a free half mile run for the children in attendance.
HOME is the brainchild of two organizations that united to create a special weekend during Memorial Day. The Duskin and Stephens Foundation and Team RWB combined to expand the annual Beef and Beer Dinner to create a truly awesome weekend with several unique opportunities, all to raise money for outstanding causes.
The Duskin and Stephens Foundation was founded to commemorate two fallen Special Forces Soldiers, Mike Duskin and Riley Stephens. The mission of The Duskin and Stephens foundation is to support the families of fallen members of Special Operations Forces and the educational needs of children of active duty Special Operations Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines through community outreach events, scholarships, interactive educational/recreational programs, and related activities.
Danny and Chad, two fellow Green Berets, developed the initial plan to raise money; host a fundraiser dinner called 'Beef and Beer' and offer several items for auction. This annual event became a widely attended social function in Pinehurst and attendance grew rapidly every year.
This year Mike Erwin, founder of Team RWB, realized that his organization could partner with Duskin and Stephens Foundation to create an even bigger event. Both organizations are veteran focused, making this a logical collaboration. Team RWB's mission is to connect veterans to their communities through physical and social activity, and Mike, Danny and Chad saw an opportunity to use these activities to raise money in support of both organizations' mission.
In addition to the 5 Mile Buddy Run the weekend included a CrossFit workout, a golf outing, a gun shooting opportunity, a yoga event, and the staple event - the Beef and Beer Dinner. Celebrities in attendance included Tim and Elisabeth Hasselbeck and country music star Scotty Mcreery.
